The Pearson Peacekeeping Centre in cooperation with the Cairo Regional Centre offers German-sponsored Police Training course in Cairo
CAIRO, EGYPT (September 2, 2008) – The Pearson Peacekeeping Centre (PPC) with funding from the German government is delivering a police training course hosted by the Cairo Regional Centre for Training on Conflict Resolution and Peacekeeping in Africa (CCCPA). The PPC-led facilitation course, held from September 6 to 12, aims to empower national police organizations to prepare their staff for peace operations.
The Design, Development and Facilitation (DDF) course adopts a “train-the-trainer” approach where participants – who are senior trainers in their respective organizations – will be exposed to learning and facilitation techniques that they can adapt to their own environments.
“Providing African police and gendarmerie organizations with the ability to train their own people further strengthens their capacity to develop effective peacekeeping programs in their home countries,” said Peter Miller, Director of the PPC’s Africa Program.
Capacity-building is a fundamental aspect of the Pan African Police Capacity-building Program. The DDF course will improve East and North African police and gendarmerie organizations’ training capacity to increase their contributions to peace operations for the United Nations and African Union, and assist the region in building their African Standby Brigades.
“Germany actively supports a viable African security structure: we provide military personnel, police officers and civilian experts for UN peace missions, and contribute around nine per cent of the total cost. We also assist in building African capacities for such missions both in the UN and the AU framework,” says Hans-Werner Bussmann, Deputy Head of the German Embassy in Cairo. “Germany is proud to contribute to the training of future trainers in order to enhance Africa's own capabilities.”
The Cairo Centre is adopting an integrated training approach aimed at bringing together major stakeholders actually involved in peacekeeping operations (military, police and civilians). The Centre pays special attention to gender mainstreaming in peacekeeping operations and using Information & Communication Technology in conflict resolution and peacekeeping in Africa.
“Both The PPC and the CCCPA have an excellent reputation for building strategic partnerships and delivering peace operations training projects in Africa,” said Ambassador Soad Shalaby, Assistant Foreign Minister and Director of CCCPA. She expressed her Government’s support for this initiative as “it responds to the African aspirations to assume a more active role in dealing with crises and conflicts emanating from within the African continent.” She also welcomed DDF course as the first PPC training event to be hosted by the Cairo Centre.
Countries who are attending the six-day course are Egypt, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Djibouti.
