- Pan African Police Project (PAPP)
- Since September of 2007, the PPC has expanded its capacity development activities in Africa to include nine additional countries: Niger, The Gambia, Benin, Morocco, Mauritania, Rwanda, Gabon, Cameroon and South Africa. These countries have been added to the on-going partnerships that PPC developed under the former WAPP project with six West African countries (Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Ghana and Nigeria).
This project’s aim, funded by DFAIT, is to help develop capacity of African police and gendarmerie institutions to participate in peace operations. PPC is working with local police and gendarmerie organizations to develop the structures, knowledge and abilities necessary to function within the challenges of peace operations in a post conflict environment. PPC provides training, mentoring and advising to develop organizational capacity to participate efficiently in peace operations.
- Pan African Police Capacity Building Program (PAPCBP)
- The PPC, with funding from the German Federal Foreign Office, continues to expand with a newly-approved police in peace operations capacity building program in Africa. This year, the PPC initiated the Pan African Police Capacity Building Program, which aims to strengthen the capacity of police / gendarmerie organizations to participate more effectively in peace operations as United Nations and/or African Union Police.
With funding from the German Federal Foreign Office, the Pan African Police Capacity Building Program implemented several capacity-building initiatives that build upon lessons learned and best practices from the PPC's past and current projects in Africa, and extended them into the following sub-regions of the continent: Southern Africa, Eastern Africa and parts of Northern Africa.
"We are delighted to partner with the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre in the effort to improve the effectiveness of peacekeeping operations around the world. With its longstanding experience in peacekeeping training, the PPC is best suited to implement such an ambitious program in Africa"These courses and events are designed to strengthen the capacity of the targeted police/gendarmerie organizations to participate more effectively in peace operations as United Nations Police and/or African Union Police. Through the support of member states, the PPC program will also assist the sub-regional security structures in meeting their African Standby Force civilian police requirements.
"I find very stimulating the see the Pan African Police Capacity Building Program very engaged on the continent with a new partner, Germany, who undeniably shares our vision of peace operations, notably but not exclusively, to the African context" remarked Peter Miller, Director of the West African Police Project.Without a doubt, this program will strengthen the capacity of the targeted police/gendarmerie organizations to participate more effectively in present and future African Union and/or United Nations peace operations.
- African Center of Excellence Project (ACEP)
- The ACEP project, funded by DFAIT, is designed to facilitate training of future peacekeepers. Learning activities are supported in three locations: the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) in Ghana, the African Centre for Strategic Research Studies (ACSRS) in Nigeria, and the Ecole de Maintien de la Paix (EMP) in Mali. Since September 2007, a PPC project team working with the Centres has completed a needs assessment to evaluate each Centre's capacity to manage the facility and deliver courses. PPC will be supporting the delivery of various courses in each Centre during 2008 and 2009. Additionally, PPC is supporting the development and design of new courses by the Centres that will be used for future training.
