Peace operations can be enhanced when all stakeholders work together, have access to standardized information and are empowered to make change. This practice is often referred to as ‘capacity building’ – a catchall phrase, which is quintessentially about improving the effectiveness of an organization by working together to develop its access to information and technical know-how, improving internal management structures, processes and procedures, as well as strengthening its partnerships.
The Pearson Peacekeeping Centre (PPC) engages in both institutional and individual capacity building by surveying and analyzing the needs of partnering organizations – such as NGOs, police, gendarmerie, military, government, IGOs – and providing them with needed information, which they can modify to suit their own needs, values and norms.
At the PPC, we support our clients and partners in the learning process and, consequently, promote long-term sustainability. Capacity building is a two-way relationship: we assist our partner organizations, and at the same time we learn how to be more effective teachers and supplement our courses, exercises and simulations with their first-hand experiences.
The PPC regularly participates in capacity building projects in Africa, and has provided the funds and expertise needed to create 5 peace operation documentation centres as part of the West African Police Project. These centres provide a physical location where civilian NGOs, military and police can gather in a neutral space and plan, discuss and research to build lasting and sustainable peace in Africa.
